Reverse description Central device depicting a crowned portcullis with chains, an adaptation of the Badge of Henry VII and the heraldic symbol of the Palace of Westminster, rendered in crisp relief at the centre of the field. The denomination numeral '1' appears below the portcullis, while the legend 'ONE PENNY' arcs above the device. The overall design, executed by Christopher Ironside, is compact and emblematic, with fine detail in the chains and portcullis grillework.

Additional information

The second portrait of Elizabeth II, modeled by Arnold Machin, had been in use since 1968, but these specific years mark the final run of the bronze penny before the Royal Mint switched to copper-plated steel in 1992. The 1983 penny is notorious among collectors: a small number were struck in proof quality on the wrong planchets, producing the "new pence" reverse error on coins that should have read "one penny" — a dies mismatch that slipped through quality control and remains one of the most discussed modern British minting errors.
