Reverse description A quartered royal shield of arms, divided by a plain cross, occupying the central field within a beaded inner circle. The four quarters display the arms of England (three passant guardant lions) and France (three fleurs-de-lis) in alternating arrangement, reflecting the traditional English claim to the French throne. The legend runs between the beaded inner and outer borders. The entire design is executed in the bold, shallow relief typical of Elizabethan hammered silver pennies.
