Reverse description A long cross pattée extends to the coin's edge, dividing the reverse into four quarters, each containing a trefoil of pellets in the angles. The mint name is distributed in abbreviated form around the field, reading within the four quadrants created by the cross. A pellet appears at the commencement of the legend. The bold, symmetrical cross design is characteristic of the Class 4d sterling penny of Edward I, with the pellet-filled angles providing the diagnostic feature of this class.
