Obverse description Entirely typographic design with no pictorial device. The merchant's trading name and location are arranged in three lines across the field in bold raised capital letters: GENERAL STORES occupying the centre, flanked above and below by the proprietor's name and locality. The circular legend JAMES CAMPBELL . GENERAL STORES . MORPETH runs around the full periphery of the flan, separated from the milled border by a continuous inner beaded circle. The field bears no additional ornament, giving the obverse a stark, utilitarian character typical of Australian colonial tradesmen's tokens of the 1850s.
