| Obverse description | Central heraldic shield flanked by two rampant lions as supporters, the whole forming a coat of arms in the English armorial tradition. The shield displays a quartered design with a diagonal cross motif at centre. A scroll beneath the shield bears the Latin motto NOSTRA VOCO in the exergue area. The legend ARGYLE HOUSE arcs above and CASHEL STREET curves along the lower periphery, all within a beaded border. |

G. L. Beath & Co. operated as a general merchant and importer in Christchurch during the 1860s, a decade when the colonial government had failed to supply adequate small change for everyday trade. New Zealand had no local mint, and British copper was slow to arrive in sufficient quantities. Merchants across the colony responded by commissioning their own tradesman's tokens, struck almost exclusively by diesinkers in Birmingham. The multiple Andrews and Gray reference numbers attached to this piece reflect genuine die varieties — Beath issued tokens across several years with subtle differences in lettering and border treatment, making a complete type set a genuine collecting challenge.
