Obverse description Crowned facing bust of King Alexander III, rendered in the tall and elongated style characteristic of the first coinage, with the head facing left. The effigy is stylised and somewhat angular, as typical of mid-13th century Scottish hammered coinage, with a crown visible above the head. A beaded or pellet border surrounds the design, and the royal legend is disposed around the periphery of the flan.
