Obverse description Facing left crowned effigy of King Alexander III, rendered in the crude hammered style characteristic of 13th-century Scottish coinage. The king's bust is depicted with a small open crown, with hair visible at the sides, and a simple draped neckline. The royal legend is disposed around the periphery of the flan within a beaded border. The portrait is bold but schematic, typical of the first coinage type struck under Alexander III.
