Obverse description Facing bust of King Harthacnut rendered in the Viking-Anglo-Saxon hammered tradition, depicted wearing a diadem or crown with ornamental detail above the brow. The king holds a sceptre in one hand and raises an arm in a gesture of authority, with the draped shoulders visible at the lower field. The effigy is boldly struck in high relief, characteristic of 11th-century Scandinavian penning coinage, with pellets and stylised decorative elements flanking the figure. The circumscribed Latin legend reads: HARÐCNVT, introduced by a cross pattée.
