Additional information

Struck under Olaf Kyrre's successors during a period of contested succession, Norwegian pennings of this type were produced at mints whose locations remain partially disputed — Bergen and Nidaros (Trondheim) are the most credible candidates, though attribution of individual dies continues to generate disagreement among Scandinavian numismatists. Skaare 55 represents one of the thinner, more stylistically degraded issues of the series, reflecting the decentralized minting conditions of the early twelfth century.
