| Obverse description | Central field displays a long cross with elaborate crosslets terminating each arm, enclosing a small crowned castle device at the centre within a round medallion. The cross is rendered in relief against a flat field, with decorative foliate or fleur-de-lis elements filling the angles. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, while the circumferential Latin legend runs between the inner and outer beaded borders, reading PHIL · IIII · D : G · REX · HIS · INDIA · Z, identifying Philip IV as King of the Spains and the Indies. The strike is typical of hammered coinage, exhibiting irregular flan edges and uneven relief. |
