Obverse description Central field displays a cross of Burgundy — two crossed, knotted branches — surmounted by an imperial crown, with the collar and jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece suspended from the intersection. The date is divided by the arms of the cross, with the mint mark positioned at the end of the circumferential legend. The bold circular Latin legend names Charles II as King of Spain and the Indies, separated by pellet stops. The overall design is characteristic of the Spanish Netherlands hammered coinage tradition, struck on a broad, irregular flan.
