| Reverse description | Central device comprises the Portuguese coat of arms — the national shield with quinas and castellated border — mounted upon an armillary sphere, a classical symbol of Portuguese maritime exploration, rendered in bold relief with pronounced meridian and latitude bands. Radiating lines in the field give a dynamic, sunburst effect to the composition. The circular legend 'REPÚBLICA • PORTUGUESA •' arcs around the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals, and the date '1980' is prominently displayed along the lower margin flanked by small decorative stars.
