| Obverse description | At centre, the Portuguese republican coat of arms superimposed upon an armillary sphere, the latter rendered as a navigational globe with meridian and equatorial bands intersected by a prominent long cross. The shield displays the traditional quinas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with bezants, enclosed within a red border with castles. The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs around the upper periphery, with the date flanked by small rosette stops positioned at the base of the design, all within a beaded border. |
