Additional information

The 1952 Pataca was minted during a period when Macau occupied an unusual economic position — a tiny Portuguese enclave that had quietly prospered through World War II while the surrounding region was devastated, partly due to its neutral status and partly through less scrutinized trade. By 1952, silver coinage was already becoming economically impractical for small denominations across the Portuguese overseas territories, and this issue preceded the shift to base metal by only a few years. Mintage figures for this type were modest, and circulated survivors in presentable condition are genuinely scarce.
