Obverse description Central field dominated by a floriated cross with fleurs-de-lis at each terminal, dividing the field into four quadrants. The cross is rendered in a Gothic decorative style typical of mid-sixteenth century Italian civic coinage. A circular legend surrounds the design, reading the name and numeral of the French king Henry II under whose auspices the coin was struck. The circlet border is irregular, consistent with hand-struck hammered production. The overall design reflects the political alliance between the Republic of Siena and the French Crown during the final years of the republic.
