| Reverse description | Saint Thomas (São Tomé), the patron saint of India, depicted seated facing slightly left, nimbed and draped in robes, holding a long spear or lance diagonally across his body in his right hand, with a palm frond or attribute at his right side. The initials 'S' and 'T' (Sanctus Thomas) flank the figure in the left and right fields respectively. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle and an outer beaded border, rendered in the late Gothic hammered style typical of Portuguese colonial coinage. |
