Obverse description Royal coat of arms of Portugal at centre, flanked by the king's initial 'I' (for Joannes/João) to the left and the mint mark 'C' (for Cochim/Cochin) to the right. The shield is rendered in the hammered style typical of early sixteenth-century Portuguese colonial coinage. The design is contained within a plain inner circle bordered by a beaded outer rim.
