Sebastião inherited the Portuguese throne at age three in 1557, and the gold pardau struck at Goa in his name reflects the administrative momentum of Estado da India rather than any direct royal involvement. The Goa mint operated under considerable autonomy — local assayers and mint masters managed production against a backdrop of persistent bullion supply problems tied to the volatile spice trade economy.
Sebastião would die at Alcácer Quibir in 1578 with no heir, triggering the Iberian Union and ultimately ending independent Portuguese coinage in the name of a House of Aviz king. This issue brackets his entire reign.
