| Obverse description | Central field bears a three-line Arabic inscription in bold thuluth script reading the mint name 'Struck in Tripoli' (ضرب في طرابلس) flanked by the Hijri date 1223 at the base and the regnal year 21 at the top, referring to the 21st year of Sultan Mahmud II's reign. The legend is contained within a dotted border characteristic of hammered Ottoman provincial coinage. The irregular flan and crude striking are typical of Tripolitan mint production of this period. |
