Obverse description Central field occupied by the elaborately calligraphed tughra of Sultan Abdulmecid I, executed in the Ottoman imperial style with characteristic vertical shafts (tuğ) rising prominently above the interlaced loops and scrolling Arabic inscriptions of the monogram. To the right of the tughra, a decorative floral sprig bearing a budding rose and foliage is rendered in relief, serving as the distinctive variety marker for this emission. The regnal year (year 8 of Abdulmecid I's reign) appears in Arabic numerals at the base of the design. The entire motif is contained within a plain field bordered by a finely executed beaded rim.
