Tipu Sultan's copper coinage was minted under a calendar system of his own invention — the Mauludi era, introduced in 1787, which reset the year count and used unique month names derived from his own devising. The Patan mint, one of several he operated across his kingdom, supplied coinage during the period immediately following the Third Anglo-Mysore War, when Tipu was compelled by the 1792 Treaty of Seringapatam to cede half his territories and surrender two of his sons as hostages to Cornwallis.
That treaty's humiliation did not interrupt minting — copper paisa production continued as Tipu rebuilt his finances and sought alliances with Revolutionary France against the British.
