Obverse description An elephant walking left in high relief, its body decorated with a dotted caparison, occupies the central field. An Arabic or Persian legend appears above the elephant in the upper field. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. The date in the Mauludi era (1221) is incorporated within the design.

Reverse description Bold Arabic or Persian inscription fills the central field across two or three lines, rendered in a large, flowing Naskh script. Small decorative lozenge or dot motifs are interspersed between the letters in the field. The legend, referring to the Patan mint, is contained within a beaded circular border. The reverse design is characteristic of Tipu Sultan's copper coinage.
