| Obverse description | The obverse bears Arabic-script legends arranged in two registers separated by a bold horizontal bar across the field. The upper register contains the ruler's name and titles in relief, while the lower register displays the regnal year in Eastern Arabic numerals. Small pellet ornaments appear at intervals within the field, characteristic of the Baroda mint style of this period. |

Baroda's coinage under Sayaji Rao II occupied an awkward political moment — the Gaekwad dynasty had signed a subsidiary alliance with the British East India Company in 1802, ceding foreign policy control while retaining internal administration, including the right to strike coin. These paisas circulated within a princely state that was nominally sovereign but increasingly subject to Company oversight, a tension that would eventually force standardization of Baroda's monetary output later in the century.
