| Obverse description | Central shield bearing the figure of Hanuman, the Hindu monkey deity, striding left and holding a club in his right hand and an object in his left hand, surmounted by a six-pointed star. The shield is framed by floral and foliate decorative elements extending into the field. A three-part ribbon device at the base bears a central inscription in Devanagari script. The whole is enclosed by a beaded border. |

Ratlam was a small Rajput princely state in Malwa whose coinage history is tangled by near-constant dynastic disputes and British interventions throughout the nineteenth century. That this issue bears the name of Ranjit Singh is notable — the state saw its rulership lapse to the Crown on more than one occasion under the doctrine of lapse, and local copper issues like this one often continued circulating well beyond their nominal date, filling gaps left by administrative disruption.
