Prithvi Bir Bikram Shah reigned under the near-total political dominance of Prime Minister Dev Shumsher and then Chandra Shumsher Rana, the Shah kings functioning largely as ceremonial figures during this period. These copper paisas circulated through a Nepal still formally closed to most foreign contact, with the Ranas controlling both treasury and trade policy.
