Mahendra's 1956 coronation came nearly three years after he formally ascended the throne following Tribhuvan's death in March 1955 — the delay a product of astrological consultation and court protocol rather than political hesitation. This paisa was struck specifically for the coronation event, making it a commemorative issue rather than a standard circulation piece, though the distinction mattered little at street level where such coins moved freely through the bazaars of Kathmandu.
