India's aluminium paisa denominations were effectively obsolete almost from the moment they were introduced at scale. Inflation through the 1970s eroded purchasing power so completely that by the late 1970s a single paisa could buy nothing independently — it existed only as change within larger transactions. The Reserve Bank of India finally demonetized all sub-ten-paisa coins in 1994, but the practical death of the denomination came well before that.
