Beneath it, the denomination legend 'एक पैसा' (Ek Paisa, meaning One Paisa) is inscribed in Devanagari script. The 1 Paisa underwent a dramatic material shift in the early 1960s as India's new decimal currency system, introduced in 1957, settled into full production. Earlier paise had been struck in bronze, but nickel brass was adopted partly to reduce costs and improve die life at the mints in Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras, all of which were running simultaneous production to meet the enormous demand of a country with hundreds of millions of people handling small-denomination coins daily.
By 1964, the 1 Paisa's purchasing power was already negligible. It was demonetized in 1971.
