| Obverse description | Central effigy of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV depicted as a uniformed military bust, facing slightly left, wearing a peaked cap and epaulettes with decorations on the chest, set against a deeply mirrored proof field. To the left of the effigy the legend reads 'DIAMOND' above a diamond-shaped star ornament and the birth year '1918'; to the right, 'BIRTHDAY' above a matching star ornament and the jubilee year '1978'.
