| Obverse description | Facing bust of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV in military uniform, wearing a peaked cap adorned with a star device, epaulettes, and a sash with a star order at the chest, centrally positioned within the rectangular field. Flanking the effigy on both left and right are two circular inscriptions each reading DECADE OF PROGRESS with the dates 1969 and 1979 arranged in an arc. Along the lower edge of the field, the legend TONGA 1979 is inscribed in large raised letters. |
