| Additional information |
Tonga issued this coin in 1996 to mark the 40th anniversary of Elizabeth II's coronation — a notable gesture given that Tonga was never a British Crown Colony but a protected state, retaining its own monarchy throughout. The relationship between the Tongan royal house and the British Crown was close enough that Taufa'ahau Tupou IV attended the 1953 coronation in person, one of the few reigning monarchs present that day in Westminster Abbey.
