| Reverse description | Three principal regalia of the British Crown are depicted in the central field: the Imperial State Crown to the upper left, the Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross laid diagonally across the design, and the Sovereign's Orb to the lower right, all rendered in high relief with fine detail. The denomination 1 PA'ANGA is inscribed in two lines at the centre of the field. The curved legend CORONATION ANNIVERSARY OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II arcs along the upper periphery, while the commemorative dates · 1953 † 1993 · appear along the lower rim, separated by a cross pattée. |

Tāufaʻahau Tupou IV was crowned in 1967, making 1993 the 25th anniversary of his coronation — not a round jubilee by most reckoning, but Tonga marked it regardless. His reign was the longest in Tongan history, eventually running to 2006, and was marked by controversial land and passport-sale schemes that drew sharp criticism from reform advocates in the 1990s. The timing of commemorative issues like this one overlaps almost precisely with that political turbulence.
