| Reverse description | A Nativity scene dominates the central field, depicting the kneeling figure of Saint Joseph gently laying the newborn Christ child while the Virgin Mary is shown in attendance beside them, all rendered in low relief. The denomination 'ONE PA`ANGA' is inscribed above the scene, and the word 'CHRISTMAS' appears in the lower portion of the design, completing the commemorative legend. |

Tonga's monetary system was only established in 1967, making the National Reserve Bank one of the younger Pacific issuing authorities. Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, who reigned from 1965 until his death in 2006, pursued an aggressive commemorative coin program throughout the 1970s and 1980s — some issues struck in unconventional shapes and metals that drew collector attention far beyond the islands' population of roughly 100,000.
This Christmas issue is among the more straightforward of that program's output, aimed squarely at the holiday collector market rather than circulation.
