The WallStreetBets subreddit has been active since 2012 when it was founded by Jaime Rogozinski. As of 2021, there are some 9.5 million active users on the subreddit. The group shot to global notoriety during the final weeks of January and early February 2021 when its GameStop short squeeze resulted in a run on various stocks that Wall Street firms were betting would fail, but average Americans believed were being undervalued. Looking to make a quick score and teach Wall Street a lesson at the same time, the groups investors targeted a number of stocks. While GameStop was the most notable in the news, there were other struggling brands backed by WallStreetBets. Obverse designs of the 1 oz Wall Street Bets Silver Round feature a depiction of the cartoon character represented in the WallStreetBets subreddit logo. The figure is shown wearing a suit with slicked-back hair and a pair of sunglasses. Included in the logo and in the design on this face, the street sign from Wall Street in New York City is depicted with bets spray-painted on the sign.
