Reverse description A naturalistic pride of lions is depicted in the central field: a mature male lion stands prominently in the background with full mane, while a seated lioness occupies the left foreground and four cubs rest and play on rocky ground at centre. The series name 'NATURA' arcs boldly across the upper periphery, and the denomination and fineness inscription '1 OZ Au 999,9' appears along the lower border. The engraver's initials 'JS' are discreetly placed in the lower right field. The composition conveys a strong sense of familial grouping and wild habitat.

Additional information

The Natura series launched in 1994 as the South African Mint's deliberate answer to its own Krugerrand — a coin aimed at collectors rather than bullion stackers, carrying no legal tender face value and marketed on the strength of its fine gold purity and wildlife subject matter. The lion issue opened the series, which was structured around annual themed sets depicting the Big Five and other southern African fauna.

The dual Hern references reflect a cataloging distinction between the proof and uncirculated strikes of this inaugural release.
