Obverse description A naturalistic arrangement of King Protea flowers (Protea cynaroides), South Africa's national flower, occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief with detailed petals and foliage. The bilingual legend arcs around the upper periphery, reading 'SUID-AFRIKA' to the left and 'SOUTH AFRICA' to the right. The date '1988' appears in the lower field beneath the floral motif. The engraver's initials 'ALS' are visible in small characters within the lower field. The design was executed by engraver Arthur Sutherland.
