Obverse description Facing bust of Saint Mark the Evangelist depicted as the winged lion of Venice, shown frontally with a bearded human face, nimbus (halo) encircling the crowned head, and large spread wings flanking the body. The saint's paws rest at the base of the design, and the figure is rendered in high relief with finely detailed feathers and fur. The surrounding legend reads S·MARCUS VENETUS, divided on either side of the central device. The coin is struck within a milled border of fine beads.
