| Obverse description | Central field depicts a lion passant to the right in a crude, boldly struck medieval style characteristic of Hanseatic civic coinage, with the mane rendered in schematic striated lines and the tail curling upward. The lion's body is set against a plain field and enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The peripheral legend WISBYCENSIS runs along the outer margin in uncial Latin characters, identifying the coin as belonging to Visby. The overall die-work is typical of the hammered bracteate-influenced tradition of late medieval Baltic minting. |
