Additional information

The Ort denomination — a quarter thaler — proliferated wildly across the German states during the Kipper- und Wipperzeit, the currency debasement crisis of roughly 1619–1623 in which mints competed to produce increasingly debased coinage before their neighbors could do the same. Brandenburg-Prussia was no exception. George William's administration was chronically underfunded, and the mint output of these years reflects fiscal desperation more than monetary policy.

KM#86.7 is one of several die varieties attributed to this reign and period, distinguishable by mintmaster marks rather than any substantive design change.
