| Obverse description | Central shield bearing the Swedish royal arms, crowned and placed within a lozenge-shaped frame, surrounded by an outer beaded or rope border. The legend CAROLVS • D • G • PRINCEPS • SVECIAE • 1599 runs around the periphery in Latin, identifying Karl as Prince of Sweden by the grace of God. The date 1599 is incorporated into the circumferential legend. The overall design is characteristic of late 16th-century Swedish hammered coinage, with somewhat irregular flan shape and uneven strike typical of the period. |

Karl, Duke of Södermanland, issued this coin while ruling as regent following the deposition of his nephew Sigismund III — who also held the Polish throne — after the Battle of Stångebro in 1598. The "Lord Protector" title was a calculated middle ground: Karl controlled Sweden entirely but delayed assuming the kingship until 1604, navigating both domestic opposition and the ongoing dynastic contest with the Vasa line loyal to Sigismund.
The Type I designation distinguishes it from later die modifications made as Karl consolidated power and refined the coinage before his formal coronation.
