Obverse description Central shield bearing the arms of the city of Leiden — two crossed keys — enclosed within a decorative cartouche or beaded border. The date 1573 appears above the shield in the field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design, reading as a charitable exhortation. The striking is irregular and characteristic of emergency or siege coinage produced under wartime conditions.
