| Obverse description | Armored bust of a nobleman facing right, wearing a ruffled collar and articulated pauldron, with flowing curled hair. The portrait is rendered in a bold, somewhat naive hammered style characteristic of provincial Dutch coinage of the mid-to-late seventeenth century. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy reading MON · NOVA · COMIT · ZELANDIÆ, denoting the coin as a new issue of the County of Zeeland. A castle mintmark (♜) appears as the Middelburg mint symbol within the legend. The irregular flan edge is consistent with the piedfort's double-weight hammered production. |
