Issued as part of Peru's ongoing "Riqueza y Orgullo del Perú" series, which began in 2010 to highlight the country's biodiversity and agricultural heritage. Quinoa had been cultivated in the Andean highlands for roughly 7,000 years before the United Nations designated 2013 the International Year of Quinoa — a timing that made this issue something of an official punctuation mark on that recognition.
The series as a whole has produced strong collector demand domestically, with individual releases often disappearing from bank counters within days of issue.
