The Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena in Arequipa is one of the more extraordinary surviving colonial complexes in South America — a walled city within a city, covering roughly 20,000 square meters, that functioned as a virtually self-contained Dominican community from its founding in 1579 until it was opened to the public in 1970. For nearly four centuries it remained closed to the outside world. This coin belongs to the Banco Central's ongoing "Riqueza y Orgullo del Perú" circulation commemorative series, which began issuing bimetallic and single-alloy pieces honoring heritage sites from the late 2000s onward.
