Additional information

Mariano Melgar was a poet and patriot executed by royalist firing squad in 1815 at age 24, following the defeat of the Pumacahua Rebellion — one of the bloodiest early uprisings against Spanish colonial rule in what would become Peru. This coin was issued exactly two centuries after his death, part of the Banco Central's long-running "Riqueza y Orgullo del Perú" commemorative silver program. Melgar is also credited with developing the yaraví, a melancholic Andean song form blending Quechua musical tradition with Spanish verse structure.
