The Central Railroad of Peru — the Ferrocarril Central Andino — was engineered by Henry Meiggs in the 1870s and climbs to over 4,800 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest standard-gauge railways ever built. Construction was brutal: thousands of Chinese laborers died on the ascent through the Andes, and the financial strain contributed directly to Peru's fiscal collapse ahead of the War of the Pacific. This coin is part of the Banco Central's long-running commemorative series honoring Peruvian engineering and national infrastructure.
The line didn't reach its terminus at Huancayo until 1908 — a full century before this coin was struck.
