The nuevo peso was introduced on 1 January 1993 as part of a redenomination that stripped three zeros from the old peso, a direct response to the inflation that had eroded the currency through the 1980s. Coins dated 1992 were struck in anticipation of the changeover and entered circulation the following year. The series was short-lived: the 1994 peso crisis — triggered by a sudden devaluation in December of that year — undermined confidence in the new currency almost immediately, and by 1996 the "nuevo" designation was quietly dropped.
