Reverse description The reverse features a rectangular panel occupying the majority of the field, within which the Latin scriptural legend IAM · NON · SVNT · DVO · SED · VNA · CARO is inscribed in four lines of bold Roman capitals, a reference to Matthew 19:6 symbolising the union of Francis and Mary. The date 1559 appears in the exergue below the panel. A cross pattée serves as an initial mark at the top of the design, above the panel. The irregular flan and hammer-struck surfaces are consistent with the production methods of the Edinburgh Mint during this period.
