Obverse description Full-length effigy of King Richard II depicted in armour, standing within a ship and facing forward, holding an upright sword in his right hand and a quartered shield of arms in his left. A flag is displayed at the stern of the vessel. The hull of the ship fills the lower portion of the field, with rigging details visible, rendered in the characteristic hammered style of late fourteenth-century English gold coinage. The Latin legend encircles the design within a beaded border, proclaiming the king's titles as sovereign of England, France, Ireland, and Aquitaine.
