| Obverse description | Facing crowned effigy of Edward III standing in a large ornate warship, holding a sword in his right hand and a quartered shield of England and France ancient in his left. The ship is depicted with elaborate rigging, a forecastle at left, and a beaded hull riding stylized waves. A lion appears at the ship's stern and a second at the prow, while a cross potent mintmark is visible at the start of the legend. The circumferential legend in Gothic uncial lettering reads the royal titles of Edward as King of England and Lord of Ireland and Aquitaine, separated by ornamental stops. |
