Issued as part of Israel's long-running wildlife series, this coin commemorates the Common Nightingale, a migratory bird that passes through the Levant on its route between sub-Saharan wintering grounds and European breeding territories. The series was introduced in the 1990s partly to cultivate an international collector market for Israeli silver issues — a deliberate strategy by the Bank of Israel to generate foreign currency revenue alongside domestic commemorative sales.
KM#290 was struck at the Berne mint in Switzerland, a longstanding arrangement Israel used for several collector-grade silver issues during this period.
